Aimed at adults without a maths qualification, this series of short workshops covers the basic calculations used in everyday situations, from managing household expenses, working out recipes to planning day-to-day journeys. Each workshop focuses on a different topic, giving participants the opportunity to build knowledge, skills and confidence ... all in a relaxed and informal environment.

 
 

Making Sense of Numbers

Getting Started

This starter module is primarily designed to engage the learner and familiarise them with working collaboratively, sharing ideas, talking about mathematics, listening to other’s contributions and solving problems together. The session will also contribute to a baseline assessment of individual participant’s capacity to engage with numbers, counting and basic calculation skills.

Shopping

This session looks at an everyday basket of shopping and the various mathematical calculations needed to understand the cost of items and value when compared to the purchase options available. It builds on the benefit of working in groups to solve mathematical challenges and different ways of solving problems.

Making Sense of Numbers

Household Budgeting

This session looks at an example monthly budget, typical sources of income and usual expenses. It introduces the benefits of recording expenditure and looks at the difference between fixed and viariable expenses. The aim of the sessions is to encourage participants to practice basic calculations covered in previous sessions to help understand the relationship between income and expenditure along with the options managing a monthly budget..

Cooking

This session looks at 3 different recipies for making meatballs, houmous and a cocktail. Each recipe is examined for the different measures of ingrediants required for different numbers of people and the various calculations required in makeing the necessary adjustments.

Travel

This session looks at the maths needed to work out time, distance and cost calculations used when planning journeys. The session uses different modes of transport, including walking and cycling, to ensure inclusivity.
